Cory passed away in August 2016.

Cory is a small under 2 pound kitten, suffering painful injury. Yet he trusted humans to help him. During his care he purrs and accepts treatment. He is a real survivor, meowing for his food and showing a real spirit to live in spite of injury. Waking his caregiver - Frannie, up all during the night for his feedings, with his strong vocal meowing! Pictures of Cory are on the Facebook account https://www.facebook.com/HuiPonoHoloholonaPAWS.

On the afternoon of December 2, 2014, we had a tragic incident when a pack of loose dogs came onto the PAWS property and killed over 15 felines.  Another 10 are still missing. Some cats escaped into the surrounding forest and have returned, but the older ones and others, were easy victims. Some felines were in the community hall shelter where the caretaker is usually on-site and they were taken by surprise and easily trapped by the pack of large dogs. The remaining cats and the volunteers have been traumatized to say the least. The humans have decided that we have to reach out past our local group to ask for the funds to add to the safety of the cats as quickly as possible.  We found that when we make people aware of our situation they want to help. Hopefully, that will include you.

On Friday February 13, 2015, Vivian, Tina and Frannie were at the Hawaii State Capitol in support of the animal protection bills presently before the House/Senate, brought by Inga Gibson lobbyist for the Humane Society of the United States.  We met many other animal organizations from other islands as well.

From that meeting we then went to our island Reps concerning these very important bills but also presented them directly or through their staff about our 20 Acre Fence Grant request as well.  We did not stop there, we then went to all the Senators/House Reps that would be on the grant committee The Senate Ways and Means Committee and The House Finance Committee.  (Vivian has the list of names we visited)  We were greeted very well and they were so patient to hear us out.  We spoke about why we put in for a grant for the 20 acres of fencing, gave them a copy just in case,  and gave our verbal list on how important it is.

We gave the history of HPH, of our previous and current accomplishments. We spoke of our ongoing feline rescues, our fence fund raiser for the one acre, of the Pahoa lava threat,  what happened on 12/2, the critical need for the fencing because of loose dogs/abandoned vicious hunting dogs coming on the sanctuary to kill our rescued residents, and putting us in harms way as well.  Frannie pointed out our future goal /ear marked to provide for the community a much needed horse therapeutic program in a year or two.  Our potential to help the animals and people in our community is unlimited!

Joy San Buenaventura liked our plan for the fencing, as well as Rep Clift Tsuji, both welcomed us into their office giving us more time to explain our fence grant importance.  Rep Feki Pouha (Minority Whip) was a real pleasure to meet.

So we will see how far this goes now that its in the hands of our legislature. Mahalo to each of you for all you do.

Please be careful everyone....it is the season of giving....but some are taking !! Frannie's car was taken last Saturday night. It has been recovered, but damaged. Keep your fingers crossed & pray that it can be fixed. Frannie spends every dime she has on caring for the animals....and now this added auto expense (hopefully just under $1,000) is really hurting. Please, if can, donate to help cover the costs of the animals at PAWS-Pono Animal Way Sanctuary. Food costs run $600.00 a month. Your generosity would be so appreciated. Have a safe and wonderful Holiday Season. Aloha, Hui Pono Holoholona.
